Innsbruck Museums and Innsbruck Art Galleries

There are a number of quite exceptional and unexpected museums and Austrian art galleries around Innsbruck, celebrating the history of the Tyrol region. One such museum within Innsbruck is the Swarovski Kristallwelten (Crystal Worlds), where you can marvel at some truly beautiful crystalware, including some glistening creations by leading contemporary artists Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.

Some quite dramatic Gothic-style sculptures and grand altarpieces are displayed at the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, created by a number of Dutch and Flemish artists. Alpine art and relief maps are the subjects explored at the Innsbruck Alpenvereinsmuseum (Alpine Club Museum), while the Wunderkammer (Gallery of Wonders) at the Schloss Ambras exhibits pieces created by unusual means, along with an inspiring portrait gallery, housed on the upper floor of the actual palace.




For something a little more unusual in central Innsbruck, take a stroll along the Leopoldstrasse to the Glockengiesserei Grassmayr (Grassmayr Bell Museum), where bells of all sizes are still constructed using traditional methods, and have been made for more than four centuries. Alternatively, check out the period furniture, glassworks and ceramics at the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum (Museum of Local History), or head around 10 km / 6 miles out of central Innsbruck and learn a little more about the history of salt mining, at the Bergbaumuseum in the neighbouring village of Hall.
